President Xi Jinping of China is set to embark on a two-day visit to North Korea from June 8, marking his first trip there in nearly seven years as China seeks to reinforce its ties with Pyongyang. This move comes as Xi attempts to reassert China's influence over its lone formal treaty ally after interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and growing ties between Pyongyang and Moscow.

John Delury, a senior fellow at the Asia Society, emphasized China's continued critical role in North Korea, suggesting that Beijing remains the principal actor. The visit occurs after President Xi's recent summits with U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, further indicating the strategic importance of this trip to Pyongyang at the invitation of Kim Jong Un, according to North Korean state news agency KCNA.

Xi's visit to North Korea is particularly significant as it represents his first overseas trip of the year, following last year's visit to South Korea.
