The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, Asaduddin Owaisi, expressed his disapproval of the West Bengal government's practice of tying welfare benefits to voter rolls. At a recent event, he argued this policy unfairly excludes many voters from essential provisions such as PDS rations, vital for survival.
Owaisi challenged the rationale behind linking welfare distribution to electoral lists, highlighting that many citizens unfairly lose access to benefits despite Aadhaar authentication serving as the identified verification method. He suggested the policy seemed more focused on reducing beneficiary counts than authenticating eligibility.
Simultaneously, West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh leveled accusations of pervasive corruption against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), claiming leaders enriched themselves at the expense of welfare programs. He emphasized the need for the Citizenship Amendment Act to clarify eligibility and address citizens' concerns about welfare access.
