Starmer Commits to Defence Investment Plan Ahead of NATO Summit
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to unveil the government's defence investment plan before the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara. The promise follows pressure after Defence Minister John Healey's resignation. Starmer assured heightened defence spending and national security as priorities amid challenging budget decisions.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer communicated with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Saturday, affirming his intent to publish the UK's defence investment plan ahead of NATO's summit in Ankara next month, according to a Downing Street spokesperson.
The conversation, which took place earlier that day, saw Starmer and Rutte align on the importance of strengthening collective defence responses to shared threats. Starmer faces political tension domestically after Defence Minister John Healey stepped down on Thursday, criticizing Starmer for not allocating necessary resources to safeguard Britain from growing threats.
During the call, Starmer highlighted his goal to raise defence spending to 3% of GDP in the coming parliament, emphasizing national security's precedence despite tight budget constraints. The NATO summit, happening July 7-8, will present an opportunity to formalize these commitments.
