Belgrade Balances Diplomacy: Serbia, Ukraine Seek Economic Cooperation Amid EU Aspirations

President Aleksandar Vucic affirmed Serbia’s support for Ukraine's independence while seeking enhanced economic ties with Ukraine. Despite this, Serbia continued to abstain from imposing sanctions on Russia, its traditional ally. Both nations aim to finalize a free trade agreement crucial for Serbia's EU membership ambitions.

Belgrade will continue to support Ukraine's independence and further economic cooperation, President Aleksandar Vucic announced. However, he did not offer a commitment to sanction Serbia's ally, Russia—a significant stance as Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited Serbia for the first time since assuming office in 2019.

Vucic reaffirmed Serbia's backing for Ukraine's territorial integrity amid complexities involving territories annexed by Russia. In turn, Ukraine maintains its position on the Kosovo issue, supporting Belgrade’s stance. Vucic and Zelenskiy aim for an economic synergy through a free trade agreement by year-end, vital for Serbia's WTO and EU membership pursuits.

Amid accusations from the Kremlin that Serbia has supplied ammunition to Ukraine, Vucic dismissed these claims, stating no discussions on military cooperation occurred during Zelenskiy's visit. The Serbia-Ukraine dialogue focused on joint infrastructural efforts and dealing with energy security challenges posed by Russian incursions on Ukraine.
