In a significant move to safeguard regional biodiversity, the Tamil Nadu government announced that Kasampatty Veera Kovil Sacred Grove, located near Dindigul, has been declared a biodiversity heritage site in accordance with the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
This designation marks Tamil Nadu's second such site, following the notification of Arittapatti in Madurai in 2022. The Veera Kovil Sacred Grove, sprawling over 4.97 hectares, is a verdant expanse enveloped by lush mango plantations and acclaimed for its natural beauty.
The grove functions as an ecological cornerstone, supporting local wildlife and offering a sanctuary for various species while aiding in climate regulation. Managed by local devotees of the deity Veeranan, it is home to 48 plant species and numerous animal types, enhancing its biodiversity significance.
