Yamuna's Fury: Rising Waters and Open Floodgates

Heavy rainfall causes the Yamuna River to swell, leading authorities to open floodgates at Hathnikund barrage. The discharged water is expected to reach Delhi within 48 to 50 hours. Flood threats arise in Haryana's villages following embankment breaches, while Sukhna Lake's floodgates are also opened as a precaution.

An escalating water level in the Yamuna River has compelled authorities to act swiftly by opening floodgates at Hathnikund barrage on Sunday. Heavy rains over several days have exacerbated the river's swelling, affecting key areas in Haryana and nearby Himachal Pradesh.

The irrigation department confirmed that all 18 gates of the barrage were opened for the first time this monsoon season, releasing 1.16 lakh cusecs of water. This surge is anticipated to take 48 to 50 hours to reach the capital, Delhi.

Furthermore, significant precipitation has strained the Som River in Haryana, triggering potential flood threats in villages like Paniwala due to a breached embankment. In Chandigarh, precautions were taken as Sukhna Lake neared danger levels, with authorities opening one of its floodgates to mitigate risks.
