Devastating Rains Wreak Havoc in Nepal and India
Heavy rains have triggered landslides and flash floods in Nepal and India, resulting in the deaths of at least 47 people in Nepal and seven in India. Roads were blocked, bridges were washed away, and rescue operations are ongoing, with weather conditions expected to continue until Monday.
In a catastrophic weather event, heavy rains have unleashed landslides and flash floods in Nepal, claiming the lives of at least 47 individuals, officials confirmed on Sunday. In Ilam district, bordering India, 35 fatalities were reported due to separate landslides. Meanwhile, nine individuals remain missing and three others were claimed by lightning strikes.
Neighboring India's eastern hill region of Darjeeling was similarly affected, with local reports confirming seven casualties from landslides. Rescue operations persist in a bid to find additional missing persons. Despite major roadway disruptions, some international flights have maintained operations, said Kathmandu airport spokesperson Rinji Sherpa.
Bihar state's notorious Koshi River overflowed, prompting authorities to open all sluice gates and suspend traffic over the Koshi Barrage. In Kathmandu, roads and homes faced inundation, cutting off the city from national connectivity. The continual monsoon downpours present ongoing risks, with officials urging caution as rains persist until Monday.
