Record-Breaking Spring Heatwave Fuels Wildfires in Australia and New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand are experiencing an unprecedented spring heatwave and fierce winds, breaking temperature records and igniting wildfires. Australia's weather bureau identified a mass of hot air causing the issues. Authorities issued numerous warnings and the government declared emergencies in several areas.
Australia and New Zealand faced a severe spring heatwave on Wednesday, marked by wildfires and temperature records shattered in Sydney. The Australian weather bureau traced the heat to hot air sweeping from the outback.
The resulting winds endangered populations and firefighters, with speeds of up to 100 kph. Consequently, New South Wales faced multiple fire bans, with 36 fires active and nine uncontained. Temperatures soared past 37 C in Sydney's business district.
In New Zealand, 'red' wind warnings were issued as fires destroyed properties. Authorities advised the public to remain indoors and anticipate service disruptions, following a deadly incident caused by wind on Tuesday.
