A significant blaze ignited at the bustling Unit-I Haat, the largest daily market in Odisha's capital, on Wednesday, leading to the destruction of approximately 30 shops and immense property damage totaling crores, officials reported.
Providing relief, authorities confirmed no casualties or injuries despite the intense fire, which took over two hours to subdue with extensive efforts.
Chief Fire Officer Ramesh Chandra Majhi stated that the fire began in a grocery store around 2.20 pm, spreading swiftly due to flammable materials. Rapid response included dispatching 11 fire tenders and 140 firefighters to control the spread. The fire's cause remains undetermined, further complicating safety measures in the unorganized market layout, as pointed out by BMC Mayor Sulochana Das.
