The Public Works Department, in collaboration with Northern Railways, has unveiled plans to construct a much-needed flyover and underpass in Northwest Delhi's Khera Kalan area to alleviate severe traffic congestion. The initiative, which officials revealed on Tuesday, carries an investment of Rs 109 crore and seeks to replace a problematic railway crossing along the Delhi-Ambala route.
According to insiders, the current manned railway crossing contributes significantly to traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours. The new infrastructure, composed of a four-lane, 800-meter-long flyover and a five-meter-wide underpass with pedestrian pathways, is expected to streamline transportation. The plan also includes a U-turn to aid local traffic movement.
This project represents a continuation of efforts initiated in 2015 to eliminate 10 such crossings in Northwest Delhi. The endeavor, which has undergone a series of approvals and revisions over the years, will be executed on a deposit basis by Northern Railways, with the crossing set to be permanently closed to facilitate construction.
