The Centre for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ) in Aizawl has expressed strong opposition to the planned extension of the railway line from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah in southern Mizoram. The organization warns that this project could have detrimental effects on the state's fragile ecosystem and water sources.
CESJ treasurer Saizampuii Sailo highlighted the ecological risks posed by the railway extension to Hmawngbuchhuah, located in the hilly Lawngtlai district along the Myanmar border. Sailo emphasized the need to protect Mizoram's environment, which faces potential damage and water scarcity.
Additionally, Sailo voiced concerns about the extension leading to an influx of outsiders, pointing to similar experiences in northeastern states like Nagaland and Meghalaya. This proposed expansion follows the recent inauguration of the Sairang-Bairabi railway line, which has significantly increased tourism in Mizoram.
