In a groundbreaking initiative, the Bird Ringing and Monitoring Station (BRMS) in Bhagalpur, Bihar, has successfully GPS-tagged a female Greylag Goose to track its migratory patterns. Named 'Sonbarsa' after its capture village, the bird now provides key data for understanding wetland habitats and enhancing conservation efforts.
This achievement marks the first instance of GPS bird tagging in Bhagalpur, setting a milestone in Bihar's avian research. According to Prabhat Kumar Gupta, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, the information gathered will illuminate the movement routes, migration timing, and survival habitats essential for sustaining wetland bird populations.
Aligned with efforts in other regions like Jamui, where previous tagging projects were conducted, this endeavor underscores Bihar's commitment to advancing ecological knowledge and preserving migratory species that rely on the state's threatened wetlands and waterways.
