Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin took a significant step towards securing Chennai's water future by laying the foundation for the Mamallan reservoir project. Estimated at Rs 342.60 crore, this initiative aims to enhance the city's drinking water resources.
This reservoir will be the sixth in the city, supplementing existing dams and desalination plants. Located in the Chengalpattu district, the reservoir will collect surplus floodwater, currently emptied into the sea, addressing Chennai's drinking water shortfall.
The project, spanning 5,161 acres, will ensure a daily supply of 17 lakh crore litres of water. Renovations on 18 km of Buckingham Canal will prevent seawater intrusion. The Coastal Regulation Zone clearance was obtained in 2025.
