Goa's Riverbanks Declared Eco-Sensitive: A Bold Step for Environmental Protection
The Union Ministry of Environment has approved Goa's proposal to designate 6.72 crore square metres along the Mandovi and Zuari rivers as 'eco-sensitive'. This move aims to halt further development and protect the fragile ecosystems of these areas, covering over 6,729 hectares. State Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed the decision.
The Government of India, through its Environment Ministry, has sanctioned a significant environmental measure to protect Goa's river ecosystems. The move designates vast areas along the Mandovi and Zuari rivers as 'eco-sensitive'.
As a result, the state government is empowered to prohibit new developments in these areas, ensuring the conservation of delicate ecological balance. This initiative was led by the Goa Forest Department and supported by the State Town and Country Planning Department.
The decision affects more than 6,700 hectares and was confirmed by State Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane, underscoring the state's commitment to environmental protection.
