The Mizoram government is intensifying its efforts to train local athletes for participation in the 2036 Olympics, set to be hosted by India, according to recent statements by Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar.
During a Q&A session in the state assembly, Minister Hmar revealed the Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) programme's goals are to deliver essential coaching to young athletes aged 8-15, with a keen focus on grooming them for future competitions. This initiative is part of the state's broader 'Bana Kaih' (Handholding) scheme, inaugurated by Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
With an allocation of Rs 2.5 crore and partnership through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the EMS programme aims to establish a robust framework for sports coaching and talent development, reaching even the most remote areas. Negotiations with other states' experts are ongoing to train local coaches further, complementing the acquisition of advanced sports equipment.
