Trump and Infantino: Building Bridges Ahead of Historic 2026 World Cup Draw
U.S. President Donald Trump praised FIFA president Gianni Infantino for organizing the upcoming 2026 World Cup, despite criticisms of their close relationship. Trump's administration has been actively involved in U.S. preparations for the event, which will be the largest ever and span across three countries.
U.S. President Donald Trump turned the spotlight on FIFA president Gianni Infantino ahead of Friday's 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, lauding the football boss for his efforts in organizing what will be the largest World Cup event. This comes amidst criticisms of Infantino's closeness with Trump, who has taken a significant role in the U.S. preparations for the event.
Infantino, who attended Trump's inauguration, previously stated that the U.S. leader deserved global recognition for his role in brokering Middle East peace. During a peace treaty ceremony, Trump praised Infantino for his leadership and the unprecedented ticket sales for the first 48-team World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
The draw, held at the John F. Kennedy Center, will decide the group-stage fates of teams in a tournament spanning 16 cities. Trump announced record-breaking ticket sales, with over one million sold to fans from 212 countries. Infantino, overseeing his third men's World Cup, did not speak publicly after receiving the presidential nod.
