In an impressive display of cricketing prowess, veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma silenced his critics with a standout performance during the third ODI against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. Sharma's innings saw him not only score 75 off 73 balls but also achieve his 61st ODI fifty, bringing his career milestone of surpassing 20,000 international runs within reach.
Opening the batting with Jaiswal, Sharma's strategic gameplay was instrumental in India chasing down South Africa's total of 271 runs. The duo compiled a run-a-ball opening partnership of 155 runs, with Jaiswal subsequently remaining unbeaten on 116. Sharma's seven boundaries and three sixes highlighted his aggressive style and solidified his status as a pillar of Indian cricket.
Having retired from Test and T20I formats, the 38-year-old Sharma has faced skepticism about his longevity in ODIs, particularly ahead of the 2027 World Cup. However, by amassing 340 runs in his past five innings and marking his 35th-century stand as an opener, he contests the narrative, trailing only behind Sachin Tendulkar's record of 40 such partnerships. Former cricketers Mohammad Kaif and Irfan Pathan praised Sharma's consistency and control, hailing his role in India's comfortable nine-wicket victory that clinched the series 2-1.
