FIDE's Firm Stance: Russia's Suspension over Ukraine Rule Violation
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has suspended Russia’s membership for up to three years due to its failure to cease organizing chess events in Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine, including Crimea. This decision is seen as a victory for Ukraine and allied chess federations advocating stricter measures against Russia post its 2022 invasion.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has taken decisive action against Russia by suspending its membership for up to three years. This comes as a response to Russia's non-compliance with a court ruling instructing them to halt chess events in territories of Ukraine under Russian control.
The decision, which underscores support for Ukraine, was officially announced in a FIDE statement. The ruling followed consistent campaigns by Ukraine and its allies, demanding that chess governing bodies adopt tougher stances against Russia after its full-scale invasion in 2022.
FIDE highlighted that Russia's chess federation continued organizing events in the contested regions, directly violating the March order from the Court of Arbitration for Sport. While individual Russian players may still compete, Russian teams are barred from participating in team events.
