Cricket Returns to Africa: 2027 ICC ODI World Cup Schedule Announced
The 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup is set to occur in October and November across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. This tournament marks the first men's cricket event in Africa since 2003. It will feature 14 teams in a new format, with discussions ongoing about the ICC's Future Tours Programme.
The 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup is tentatively scheduled from October 4 to November 21, taking place across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. The dates, initially set during the ICC board meeting in Ahmedabad in May, await final confirmation at the ICC Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh this July.
According to reports, South Africa is poised to host the lion's share of the matches, with at least 41 of the 54 games distributed across eight venues. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is anticipated to stage eight to ten matches across three venues, notably including Victoria Falls, Harare Sports Club, and Queens in Bulawayo. Namibia will welcome three games. A new Zimbabwean cricket stadium, the Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium, expects its domestic match debut this year before an official launch next May. However, South Africa’s planned visit to open this stadium as an international venue has been postponed.
This marks the first men’s World Cup in Africa since 2003, though South Africa has recently hosted the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2009 Champions Trophy, and the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. Co-hosts Zimbabwe and Namibia held the Under-19 Men's World Cup. The tournament reverts to a 14-team format after being limited to 10 teams in the last two events. Teams will be divided into two groups of seven, with the top three from each group moving to the Super Six stage. South Africa and Zimbabwe, as Full Members, secure automatic qualifications, while Namibia will go through qualification.
This World Cup marks the first ICC event in the 2027-2031 Future Tours Programme (FTP), which structures international cricket schedules. Discussions on the FTP and potential expansion of the World Test Championship (WTC) are ongoing, with final decisions anticipated at ICC meetings in Hong Kong later this year.
The ICC is also deliberating whether to include all 12 Full Members in the WTC and if one-off Tests can integrate into the championship. (ANI)
