The Dark Side of the Metaverse: Unpacking Metacrimes
The emergence of the metaverse, a three-dimensional virtual world, introduces new crimes termed 'metacrimes.' These crimes challenge current frameworks for defining, reporting, and investigating digital crimes. Research highlights the immersive nature of these environments and the associated risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. Regulatory frameworks are urgently needed to address these issues.
The Apple Vision Pro, recently launched in Australia, offers users access to immersive, three-dimensional online environments known as the metaverse. This technology allows users to explore virtual worlds, attend sports events, and even inspect homes virtually.
However, the metaverse presents new criminal challenges, referred to as 'metacrimes,' which defy existing crime-reporting frameworks. These virtual crimes, including harassment and abuse, feel extremely real due to the immersive nature of VR technology.
Research highlights the urgency for legal and regulatory frameworks to protect users, especially vulnerable populations like children. Tech companies and governments must collaborate to create safeguards for these new digital spaces.
