The National Quantum Mission (NQM) is set to provide financial support to around 15 startups, enabling them to scale up and expand globally, announced NQM Governing Board Chairman Ajai Chowdhury on Monday. Speaking at the inauguration of the International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computing (QCMC 2024) at IIT Madras, Chowdhury highlighted successful developments in cryptography and urged software companies to invest in the quantum sector.

Chowdhury revealed that 385 proposals had been received for quantum technology initiatives, and noted India's significant contributions, with 600 scientists and 40 to 50 startups already active in the field. He lauded IIT Madras for hosting the conference and emphasized the mission's goal to unify researchers under thematic hubs. Grants are expected to be awarded to startups within three months.

Prof V Kamakoti from IIT Madras, Prof Mete Atature from the University of Cambridge, and Prof Prabha Mandayam from CQuICC, IIT Madras, also spoke at the event. Cornell University's Prof Mark Wilde delivered the opening plenary talk, marking a significant moment in India's quantum technology aspirations.
