Swedish telecommunications leader Ericsson is set to revolutionize Airtel's network by deploying advanced technology for a 5G standalone network, as announced on Tuesday.
In a strategic deal, Airtel has engaged Ericsson to introduce 5G technology across 12 of its 22 telecom circles. This marks a significant milestone in their longstanding collaboration.
According to Bharti Airtel's Chief Technology Officer Randeep Sekhon, this deployment will not only bolster Airtel's long-term 5G strategy but also enhance network capacity, providing customers with innovative and varied services. Additionally, Ericsson plans to integrate its Signalling Controller solution into Airtel's existing infrastructure.
Currently, Airtel provides 4G and 5G services over a shared network layer while maintaining 2G services. Transitioning to a standalone 5G network promises exclusive 5G connectivity, although the process is expected to take some time.
Ericsson's dual-mode 5G core technology is seen as key to monetizing network slicing-based services and fostering new and diverse use cases for both consumers and businesses, according to Andres Vicente, Head of Market Area for Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India at Ericsson.
