India's Lighthouses to Shine as New Tourist Hotspots Under Government Initiative

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, headed by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, is set to transform lighthouses into major tourist attractions. Announced during a stakeholders meeting in Vizhinjam, Kerala, this initiative aims to elevate lighthouses as cultural and historical landmarks.
Sarbananda Sonowal, along with the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), highlighted the tourism potential of these maritime structures. Among the new features is a Laser Light & Sound Show at Vizhinjam Lighthouse, designed to attract more visitors.
Sonowal noted that over 500,000 tourists visited lighthouses between April and June 2024, a testament to their growing popularity. The initiative focuses on accessibility, especially for the elderly and specially-abled, and emphasizes cultural and economic revitalization, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision.
