The coordination between Tripura and Bangladesh on crucial connectivity projects is facing uncertainty amidst political upheaval in Bangladesh, reported state Transport Minister, Sushanta Chowdhury. The Agartala-Akhaura rail link and Maitree bridge, designed to enhance trade, were nearing completion, but the recent change in Bangladesh's government has cast doubts over their timelines.
Following Sheikh Hasina's resignation and the formation of an interim government under Muhammad Yunus on August 5, work on most Tripura-Bangladesh connectivity initiatives has been stalled. Despite significant progress, including almost finished rail tracks, the projects' future now hangs in balance, according to Indian Railway Construction Company Ltd (IRCON) and the Railway Ministry.
Local commerce stakeholders advocate for separating trade from politics, emphasizing that trade benefits both nations. While recent events have caused temporary disruptions, trade through various land ports has already resumed, albeit on a reduced scale. Optimism remains that these essential projects will eventually be completed and operational.
