The International Road Federation (IRF) has formally reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, voicing its alarm over the escalating number of road accident fatalities in India.
IRF president emeritus K K Kapila emphasized the need for enhanced strategies to raise awareness, shape policy, and boost road safety measures. Each year, approximately 5 lakh road accidents occur in the country, resulting in 1.5 lakh fatalities and 3 lakh injuries, leading to a 3 percent GDP loss, as highlighted by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Kapila stressed that despite existing campaigns, India continues to pose significant risks for road users. The IRF urges the Prime Minister to champion road safety initiatives, suggesting that road safety messages be integrated into his public addresses. Additionally, the dissemination of a road safety anthem in 23 Indian and 10 foreign languages is proposed to galvanize public commitment.
