Reviving Regional Airways: Government Funding Boosts Rex's Flight Path
The Australian government announced a funding boost of up to A$80 million for Regional Express Holdings (Rex) to maintain its regional routes during voluntary administration. The financial aid supports aviation access in regional communities, following Rex's decision to exit major city routes and focus on regional services.
The Australian government has pledged up to A$80 million to support airline Regional Express Holdings (Rex) during its ongoing voluntary administration period. This funding aims to preserve regional aviation access and underscores Rex's vital role in connecting Australian communities.
Transport Minister Catherine King emphasized the government's commitment to regional connectivity at a time when Rex faces financial challenges. The airline entered voluntary administration in July, heavily impacting employment through job cuts and the closure of its major cities subsidiary operating Boeing 737 flights.
The funds will also service Rex's regional routes utilizing its Saab 340 aircraft. An extension of the administration to June 30, sought by Ernst & Young, aims for increased operational capacity despite Rex's withdrawal from high-demand routes among Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, which led to an airfare surge.
