India's medical tourism sector is set for a robust expansion, with predictions of the market size reaching USD 13.42 billion by 2026, as detailed in a Grant Thornton report. This growth is spearheaded by India's competitive pricing, extensive hospital networks, and a surge in technological adoption.
The report highlights that India's affordability plays a pivotal role in its global healthcare prominence, offering medical treatments at merely 20-25% of the costs in developed countries. Quality services paired with cost-efficiency have drawn patients internationally, solidifying India's position in the medical tourism arena.
With the healthcare sector being a significant employment generator in India, there is an opportunity for expansion in rural areas where 70% of the population resides, while currently, 60% of hospital beds are in metro cities. Additionally, the rise of digital health solutions is revolutionizing patient care, with the AI-driven healthcare market poised for exponential growth.
The penetration of health insurance is also enhancing the sector. In FY23, direct premium income from health insurance reached Rs 90,600 crores (USD 10.86 billion), expanding access to quality healthcare. With these ongoing advancements, India is on track to emerge as a top global medical tourism hub.
