An unfortunate incident unfolded in Nigeria's northern Niger state on Tuesday when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded, resulting in the tragic death of at least 35 people, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Details emerged from Aishatu Saádu, FRSC sector commander in Niger state, revealing that the vehicle had skidded off the road, causing it to spill petrol, which ignited soon after the crash. The victims were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Such deadly occurrences are not uncommon in Africa's most populous country, where the transportation of petroleum products by road is a necessity due to the limited pipeline infrastructure. The frequency of these accidents is further increased by poorly maintained roads riddled with potholes, leading to an alarming number of annual fatalities.
