The Odisha government has announced an ambitious plan to develop 15 fully operational airports by 2047, coinciding with India's centenary of independence. This goal was unveiled during a High Power Committee meeting on aviation led by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja.
The committee discussed enhancing Odisha's aviation infrastructure, in line with the Vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036–47. Currently, out of the state's 19 airports or airstrips, only five are operational for civilian use. Bhubaneswar stands as the solitary international airport in the state, offering connectivity to cities like Dubai, Singapore, and Bangkok. Plans are underway to construct another international airport in Puri.
Efforts include attracting Flight Training Organisations, establishing aviation manufacturing units, and creating a supportive policy environment. These initiatives aim to transform Odisha into an aviation hub, with projections of generating Rs 5,000 crore annually from aviation services by 2047, positioning the state as a leader in eastern India's aviation sector.
