The Indian government is set to transform toll collection by implementing a barrier-free system at all 1,050 toll plazas by 2026. This move was announced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday, highlighting a significant step towards hassle-free travel for motorists.
In the Lok Sabha, Gadkari clarified that about 40 lakh FASTag passes have been issued since August. These annual passes, priced at Rs 3,000, allow private vehicles to cross 200 toll plazas, lowering the cost per crossing significantly compared to the current Rs 15,000.
The initiative involves an AI-based toll collection system, promising an end to interruptions at toll plazas and enabling cars to travel at 80 km/hour on highways. The system, which uses advanced technology, will gradually phase out the existing FASTag recharge process.
