Urgent Call for Protection: Himachal’s Apples Under Threat

In a fervent appeal to the central government, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted the plight of local apple growers facing economic threats from foreign imports. The chief minister urged immediate actions to shield domestic apple producers from international competition.
During a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Sukhu called for the creation of a 'Green Fund' with an annual allocation of Rs 50,000 crore. This initiative aims to recognize the ecological contributions of hill states like Himachal Pradesh, often referred to as the 'lungs' of North India.
Sukhu illustrated the critical economic role of apple farming in the region, accounting for Rs 4,500 crore annually. He expressed deep concern over policies favoring foreign imports, warning of dire consequences for local livelihoods and urging immediate policy reforms to safeguard small and marginal farmers.
