Twelve sailors were dramatically rescued from a sinking Bangladeshi vessel in the Muri Ganga river in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, according to police reports on Thursday.
The vessel, MV Tamjid from Khulna, hit a submerged sandbar on Wednesday while carrying fly ash from Budge Budge and began to take on water, trapping the crew onboard. A remarkable joint rescue effort by local fishermen and police saved the day.
All twelve sailors, including eleven Bangladeshi nationals, were safely evacuated. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the incident, examining factors such as poor visibility due to fog and potential mechanical faults as possible contributors to the mishap.
