In a move set to redefine the artificial intelligence landscape in India, Avataar.ai launched an innovative video model named Varya on Friday. This indigenous model aims to make advanced AI technology economically viable and culturally relevant across the nation. Varya, introduced at a press event in New Delhi, seeks to cut down execution costs while faithfully portraying India's rich regional and visual diversity.
The model was developed through a rigorous research process supported by the IndiaAI Mission, utilizing subsidized national AI compute infrastructure. At the launch, S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, highlighted the significance of Varya, stating it marks a crucial milestone in India's AI journey towards building research-led capabilities.
Varya's technical prowess is driven by a distillation technique that reduces video generation steps from 50 to four, achieving an unprecedented cost efficiency of Rs 0.48 per second for video generation. Sravanth Aluru, CEO of Avataar, emphasized the model's efficiency and accessibility, asserting that Varya makes frontier-quality AI technology accessible and reflects India's prowess in developing context-aware, scalable AI solutions.
