Lithuania Takes Flight: Drone Schools Empowering the Next Generation

Lithuania's Defence Ministry has launched drone schools to enhance its military capabilities, teaching children and adults to fly, assemble, and programme drones. Positioned near Russia's border, this initiative aims to strengthen Lithuania's air defence, a concern heightened by recent drone incursions from Belarus and increased NATO support on the eastern flank.

Lithuania's Defence Ministry has inaugurated the first of nine drone schools, aiming to fortify its military capabilities by training individuals, including children, on drone technology. Situated near the Russian border, the schools reflect Lithuania's strategic focus on enhancing air defence, a necessity given recent regional tensions.

In Taurage, close to Russia's Kaliningrad enclave, children practiced controlling drones in a virtual environment and handled mini drones under supervision, demonstrating the nation's commitment to prepare its citizens for advanced defensive measures. Teachers report high enthusiasm among the young participants, highlighting the program's engaging approach.

This development follows Lithuania's appeal to NATO for heightened air defence after drones from Belarus violated its airspace. In response, NATO has pledged to strengthen security on Europe's eastern border, marking a significant shift in defense postures amid ongoing regional conflicts.
