Muslims across India observed Muharram on Wednesday, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain with 'tazia' processions and special prayers. The day, however, was marred by a series of tragic incidents. In Uttar Pradesh alone, four people were killed and 26 injured in various districts, as 'tazias' came into contact with high-tension wires.
In Jammu and Kashmir, thousands of Shia mourners carried out the Ashura procession in Srinagar, praising Imam Hussain's sacrifice in the battle of Karbala. Similar processions were held in various parts of the country, many under tight security arrangements.
Incidents of electrocution due to contact with high-tension wires were reported from Gonda, Pratapgarh, Ballia, and Kannauj, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries. In Bihar, 14 people were injured in Araria during a Muharram procession. Several other states, including Delhi and Hyderabad, also observed the day with processions and heightened security.
