In a record-setting Diwali season, firecracker sales in Delhi skyrocketed, with traders reporting brisk business and significant consumer interest. According to Brijesh Goyal, Chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry, the demand for these celebratory items was so intense that many traders exhausted their supplies even before the festival day.

Paramjit Singh Pamma, president of the Sadar Bazar Association, noted a 40-percent increase in sales compared to last year, not just for crackers but also for lights and decorations. However, violations of the sanctioned bursting-time limits by residents raised concerns among several resident welfare associations (RWAs) over deteriorating air quality.

The Supreme Court had permitted the sale and use of green firecrackers under specific conditions, but these guidelines were widely neglected, according to local RWAs. Calls for better enforcement to ensure environmentally responsible celebrations have been renewed as both the festive spirit and public health needs are considered.
