The National Zoological Park in Delhi has witnessed an impressive trend in animal adoptions, particularly of birds and reptiles, through its innovative Animal Adoption Scheme. The initiative, which began during the pandemic, recorded its highest success in 2022-23 when 39 individuals contributed Rs 20.47 lakh.
In subsequent years, the number of adoptions fluctuated, with 2023-24 seeing a shift towards larger animals, although with fewer adoptions. Notably, the adoption program raised about Rs 18 lakh that year. The fees for adopting animals vary widely, reflecting the costs associated with different species, from small birds to larger mammals.
The scheme serves a dual purpose of engaging the public and ensuring animal welfare, with funds allocated for animal care, habitat upkeep, and conservation awareness. Future plans include offering flexible adoption durations to boost participation, aiming to include more individuals and institutions in this vital conservation effort.
