Karnataka Revolutionizes Trekking: Mandatory Guides and Tech Upgrades for Safety

Karnataka has introduced strict safety measures for trekking, requiring certified nature guides with GPS-enabled walkie-talkies to accompany trekkers. The new SOP mandates online registration, outlines trekking rules, and ensures safety equipment. It was implemented after recent incidents highlighted the need for enhanced safety in trekking activities.

Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre announced significant changes to trekking policies on Friday. To prioritize safety, the state will now require certified nature guides equipped with GPS-enabled walkie-talkies for all approved trekking routes.

The newly formulated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) mandates one guide per ten trekkers and enforces online registration for all trekking activities. Initiatives such as a mobile app and mandatory safety equipment aim to prevent incidents like those recently reported, where trekkers went missing in the forest.

Provisions for trekkers also include safety briefings, prohibitions on certain items, and necessary facilities at base camps. The official website now supports advance booking of trekking tickets, integrating convenience with enhanced safety measures.
