Flamingo Revolution: Albania's Environmental Clash Over Kushner-Backed Resort
Albania faces pressure from the EU for environmental compliance as it proceeds with a Kushner-backed luxury resort, amid protests over its impact. Dubbed the Flamingo Revolution, these protests highlight concerns about Prime Minister Rama’s tenure. The European Commission has insisted on adherence to environmental legislation for EU accession.
The European Commission is applying pressure on Albania to align with EU environmental laws in response to plans for a Kushner-backed luxury resort. This resort, which has sparked protests due to its potential environmental impact, could affect Albania’s chance of EU accession.
The protests, named the Flamingo Revolution, revolve around the planned resort's impact on a migratory region for flamingos, escalating into wider opposition against Prime Minister Edi Rama's leadership. Despite environmental concerns, Rama asserts an assessment will be conducted and that the project aligns with Albania’s commitment to wildlife protection.
Officials like Guillaume Mercier from the European Commission have urged Albania to avoid actions that may impede its EU accession process, stressing ongoing communication with Albanian authorities. Meanwhile, Kushner's Affinity Partners has yet to address requests for comments.
