0530 SUN SATISFIED WITH HIS SWIM IN 200M HEATS

China's Sun Yang eased comfortably through the heats of the 200 meters freestyle on Sunday with the fastest time of one minute 47.58 seconds in the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Centre pool.

The six-time Olympic medallist, who could win up to five golds in Jakarta, said he was "satisfied" with his swim and that he would be taking the Asian Games very seriously as an important stepping stone on the road to the Tokyo Olympics.

Sun's compatriots Liu Yaxin and Peng Xuwei were quickest in the heats for the women's 200 backstroke, while Japan's Satomi Suzuki and Reona Aoki topped the times in the women's 100 butterfly.

The finals will be later on Sunday.

China claimed the Games' first gold medal when Sun Peiyuan won the men's changquan at the Jakarta International Expo at Kemayoran. Hosts Indonesia opened their account with a silver from Edgar Marvelo, while Chinese Taipei's Tsai Tsemin claimed the bronze.

0100 FIRST DAY OFFICIAL ACTION GETS UNDERWAY

After an explosive opening ceremony that lit up the Jakarta sky on Saturday night, the first official day of action got underway at the 18th Asian Games on Sunday morning.

While preliminary action has already taken place in sports such as soccer, Sunday will see the first medals awarded at the quadrennial multi-sports Games.

The sky over the Indonesian capital was clear with temperatures already climbing above the 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) mark.

The first gold medal will come in Wushu with men's changquan final in progress at the Jakarta International Expo at Kemayoran.
