NCW Investigation Uncovers Security Lapses in Trainee Doctor's Murder Case; Nationwide Strike Announced

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has uncovered significant security, infrastructure, and investigation lapses at RG Kar Medical College, following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor. This revelation has led to a nationwide strike by doctors starting from August 17, demanding immediate corrective actions.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has unmasked serious lapses in security, infrastructure, and investigation procedures following the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The preliminary findings raise urgent concerns about the adequacy of safety measures within the institution.

In a public statement released on Friday, the NCW disclosed their prompt investigation, noting that the crime scene is undergoing sudden renovations, which could compromise evidence. On August 10, the NCW urged the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, to ensure a thorough and immediate investigation into the case.

The NCW's two-member inquiry committee, consisting of Delina Khondgup and Advocate Soma Chaudhary, arrived in Kolkata on August 12. Their findings revealed a lack of security personnel during the incident, inadequate safety provisions for female staff, and poor infrastructure. In response, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide strike from August 17 to 18, halting routine OPDs and elective surgeries while maintaining essential services.
