A tragic gas explosion at a coal mine in Iran's South Khorasan Province has claimed at least 19 lives and left 17 people injured, according to state television reports on Sunday. Thirty miners are still reported to be trapped underground.
The devastating accident was triggered by a methane gas explosion in blocks B and C of the mine, which is operated by the Madanjoo company. There were 69 workers present in the affected blocks at the time of the explosion.
The explosion occurred on Saturday at 9 p.m. (1730 GMT), as stated by Iranian state media. Rescue efforts are underway to reach those still trapped in the mine.
