Kerala is embroiled in a heated debate over welfare fund pensions, as Finance Minister K N Balagopal assured the Legislative Assembly that there would be no cuts, with plans to increase them. The announcement followed an adjournment motion from the opposition, which called for a discussion on delayed pension disbursals.
While Balagopal highlighted the government's financial contributions over the last four years, he also blamed the past Congress-led UDF government for having allocated significantly less. Emphasizing on the delayed payments, Balagopal attributed innovations in software for faster processing and increased revenue collection.
The opposition, led by V D Satheesan, walked out accusing the government of ignoring the welfare boards, many of which are reportedly nearing crisis. Satheesan highlighted severe lapses, including unfulfilled pensions and a hefty backlog affecting crucial social benefits, urging the state government to prioritize the issue immediately.
