Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Faces Overnight Power Loss
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine experienced a temporary loss of all off-site power, reported the International Atomic Energy Agency. The plant was briefly disconnected but reconnected to a lower capacity power line. Military activities affected Ukraine's power grid, causing nuclear plants to lower output.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on Saturday that Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant temporarily lost all off-site power overnight. According to IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, the disruption was linked to widespread military activities affecting the nation's electricity infrastructure.
The plant was successfully reconnected to a 330-kilovolt power line after a half-hour outage; however, a more powerful 750 kV line remains disconnected, the agency noted. The overnight activities forced operating nuclear power plants (NPPs) across Ukraine to reduce their output, further stressing the national power grid.
The incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of Ukraine's energy sector amid regional conflicts, impacting both civilian electricity supply and the safe operation of critical infrastructure like nuclear facilities.
