On Sunday evening, a sudden fire ignited at the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corp Ltd's urea plant in Dibrugarh, Assam, according to local officials. This event raised immediate concerns over safety and operations at the facility.
The fire originated from the compressor house of the Namrup urea plant but was extinguished within an hour, said a senior official. BVFCL's senior manager, Pankaj Kumar Gogoi, indicated the blaze likely resulted from a gas leak. Prompt action by BVFCL's two fire tenders, along with assistance from OIL, APL, and Naharkatia, ensured the fire was swiftly brought under control.
Despite the fire, there were no reported injuries to plant employees. Meanwhile, the exact extent of damage remains to be assessed by a technical team's survey. Established in 1969 as part of Hindustan Fertilizer Corp Ltd, BVFCL is a vital urea producer for eastern India, distinguishing itself by using natural gas for nitrogenous fertiliser production.
