In what has been hailed as a 'golden decade' for Indian Railways, significant strides have been made in freight movement and revenue. Mohammad Jamshed, former Member (Traffic) of the Railway Board, revealed that freight movement surged from 8,000 million tons to 12,000 million tons, and revenue skyrocketed to Rs 18 lakh crore.
Capital expenditure has notably increased, fueled by government support and targeted infrastructure investments. Jamshed assures that efforts in safety and efficiency are ongoing, with mission Kavach contributing to a reduction in accidents. Passenger revenue targets are also set at an ambitious Rs 92,000 crore, and the Railways focuses on achieving these record goals.
The expert praised the government's Gross Budgetary Support, emphasizing its vital role in funding capital projects without the need for market borrowings. Jamshed expressed confidence in the Railways' future, given their full utilization of allocated funds, foreseeing further capex claims with continued performance.
