Delhi's fire safety measures have come under sharp criticism after a catastrophic blaze at the Flourish Stays Bed and Breakfast in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar resulted in 21 deaths, including those of foreign nationals. This marks one of the deadliest fire incidents in the capital in recent years.

The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns about fire safety compliance in hotels, guest houses, commercial venues, and residential buildings throughout the national capital. According to the Delhi Government and the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), more than 500 people have died in fire-related incidents from 2019 to March 2026, with thousands more injured in the same timeframe.

DFS data reveals 95 deaths in 2019-20, 41 in 2020-21, 55 in 2021-22, 95 in 2022-23, 77 in 2023-24, 90 in 2024-25, and 65 in 2025-26, up to March. The most fatalities occurred in 2019-20, primarily due to the tragic Anaj Mandi fire, claiming 44 lives alone.

Additionally, fires between 2019 and 2025 have injured at least 4,403 people. The growing frequency of fire emergencies is evident in the rising number of service calls to the DFS.

Official records indicate 17,231 calls received in 2019-20, growing to 36,101 by 2025-26. However, discrepancies in data show even higher figures, with inconsistencies pointing to potentially larger systemic issues.

Fire safety specialists link recurring incidents to rapid urbanization, population growth, narrow lanes restricting emergency access, illegal buildings, fire norm violations, and poorly maintained firefighting equipment. Post-Malviya Nagar fire, authorities are expected to ramp up inspections across high-risk structures citywide.
