Infant Mortality Rises Amid Abortion Bans: A Worrying Trend

Recent research highlights a concerning rise in infant mortality rates in U.S. states with stringent abortion restrictions following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

The study examined 14 states where post-six-week pregnancy abortion bans were enforced between September 2021 and August 2022. Results found an estimated 478 additional infant deaths during this period, suggesting the policies may be dismantling progress in reducing infant mortality, according to Alison Gemmill from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The study, published in JAMA, notes significant impacts on infants with congenital issues and higher mortality rates among disadvantaged groups, such as Black infants. Furthermore, the research indicates a parallel rise in fertility rates within these regions, underscoring the wide-reaching effects of such abortion policies.
