The National Public Health Institute of the Democratic Republic of Congo has verified that an illness causing over 50 deaths in the northwest region was malaria. Initial symptoms reported included fever, fatigue, vomiting, and weight loss.
Earlier, health officials suspected either malaria or food poisoning as the cause. Recent laboratory testing confirmed malaria, according to INSP coordinator Christian Ngandu. The findings put an end to weeks of uncertainty about the disease's origin.
Researchers are still awaiting results from water, drink, and food samples sent abroad to check for signs of intoxication. This follows a similar malaria outbreak in December, also initially of unidentified origin.
