Health Secretary Stresses Women-Centric Public Health Action
Speaking at the launch, Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava emphasized that national progress is directly linked to the health of women.
“A family or a nation cannot truly progress unless women are healthy. The Delhi Metro campaign gives us a powerful medium to reach people directly,” she said.
She highlighted the growing risks posed by emerging technologies that enable illegal fetal sex determination, calling for increased community awareness and strict adherence to the PC&PNDT law.
WHO Highlights the Global Significance of Women’s Health
Dr. Catharina Boehme, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia, underscored the symbolic timing of the launch—coinciding with the conclusion of the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
“As one journey ends, another begins. Healthy Women = Healthy Nations, because #BecozSheMatters,” she declared, stressing that women’s health—including mental well-being—is a foundation for community and national progress.
National Commitment to Women’s Health and Safety
India continues to reinforce women-centric initiatives through major national programmes such as:
-
Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan
-
Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)
-
Mission Shakti
-
Nirbhaya Fund initiatives
-
Ayushman Bharat for financial protection and access to healthcare
Senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, including Smt. Meera Srivastava and Smt. Geetu Joshi, were present for the launch, alongside representatives from WHO and UN partner agencies.
Cultural Messaging and Community Engagement
The event also featured a performance by WeBhor, an all-women musical band, celebrating the resilience and strength of women. Following the performances, dignitaries and participants boarded the inaugural campaign train ride, symbolizing collective responsibility and unity toward advancing women’s safety, dignity and health.
Dr. Boehme expressed gratitude to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for hosting and amplifying the campaign:
“Help spread this message and join forces—because healthy women make healthy nations.”
